Water Softening Systems

Softening systems are used to eliminate the hardness problem caused by the accumulation of Ca (calcium) and Mg (magnesium) minerals in the water. Hard water is harmful to human health, and shortens the life of plumbing and water-operated equipment such as boilers, pipes, heat exchangers and water heaters, so these minerals must be removed.

The basic working principle of water softening systems is based on the ion exchange method. According to this method, the hardness of the water is removed as a result of replacing the Ca+2 (calcium) and Mg+2 (magnesium) ions, which cause hardness in water, with Na+ (sodium) ions in the cationic resin. At the end of the process, the resin bed, which is saturated with the ions that cause hardness, is cleaned by the regeneration process. During the regeneration, the water softening system works in reverse mode this time to remove the ions in the saturated resin bed with salt. In this way, the cationic resin is re-saturated with sodium ions so that the system can successfully perform the next water softening process. The Ca+2 and Mg+2 ions held in the resin are thrown into the drain with water during the regeneration process.

Automatic regeneration units used in water softening units work in single and tandem principle depending on time and flow.

Time Controlled Water Softening Systems

In time-controlled water softening systems, regeneration with salt water is carried out automatically every day or at the set days and hours.

Volumetric Controlled Water Softening Systems

In volumetric controlled water softening systems, regeneration process is carried out automatically with salt water at the flow rates adjusted according to the raw water hardness level and the amount of resin used. The regeneration intervals of flow-controlled water softening units vary depending on the amount of water usage.
